Listening to a 100Hz sine wave tone for 60 seconds can alleviate motion sickness symptoms for up to two hours.
Samsung released Hearapy, a free app available for Android devices on the Google Play store, claiming it can reduce motion sickness symptoms through sound. The app plays a 100Hz sine wave tone via headphones for 60 seconds, stimulating the vestibular system, responsible for balance and orientation. Although the tone duration can be adjusted between 40 to 120 seconds, one minute is suggested for relief, with the option to repeat if needed. According to Samsung, this app stems from Nagoya University’s research indicating specific sound wavelengths reduce discomfort experienced by people reading in moving vehicles. Effectiveness may vary depending on headphones, but Samsung suggests using its Galaxy Buds 4 Pro. The headphones should reproduce the tone at 80 to 85 decibels for optimal efficacy.
