When building a large website with a sizeable codebase, CSS can pose significant challenges. Meta faced similar issues, leading to the creation and open-sourcing of StyleX, a scalable CSS solution. StyleX merges CSS-in-JS’s ease of use with static CSS’s performance. It offers atomic component styling, deduplicates definitions to minimize bundle size, and provides a straightforward API for developers.
StyleX is now a standard at companies like Figma and Snowflake. At Meta, it’s the default styling system for Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads.
This episode of the Meta Tech Podcast features Melissa, a Meta software engineer and StyleX maintainer. Pascal Hartig discusses StyleX’s development, the impact of open source on the project, and engagement with large companies adopting StyleX.
