The Scott Pilgrim series is experiencing a revival, now with the game Scott Pilgrim EX. After the live-action film and comics ended in 2010, the series resurged: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game was re-released in 2021, and in 2023, Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim Takes Off reimagined the story. A 20th-anniversary box set followed. Now, Scott Pilgrim EX emerges.
Creator Bryan Lee O’Malley notes there wasn’t a grand revival plan; projects naturally led to each other. Universal’s interest after the show and discussions with Tribute Games prompted the new game. Scott Pilgrim EX resembles its predecessor as a side-scrolling beat-’em-up set in a pixelated Toronto. However, it extends the Takes Off narrative, focusing on Scott’s bandmates’ rescue. Fans enjoyed the anime’s creative synergy, reuniting talent from the live-action film.
The first Scott Pilgrim game was by Ubisoft; now Tribute Games, with the original team, continues the legacy. EX includes a new soundtrack by Anamanaguchi, art by Paul Robertson, and O’Malley’s active involvement. O’Malley finds joy in collaboration, returning to Scott Pilgrim revitalizing. He’s currently centered on the game’s expansive story, penning a new mini comic about Metal Scott.
O’Malley aims to make Scott Pilgrim accessible to newcomers, maintaining continuity while providing entry points for anyone. The future of Scott Pilgrim post-EX remains open, but O’Malley wishes to return to comics for creative freedom. Scott Pilgrim EX launches on March 3rd for Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
