Slay the Spire II: Even Better with a Friend

Co-op multiplayer introduces fresh strategies and an opportunity for doodling. “Slay the Spire II” launched in early access recently and stands as an excellent sequel to its predecessor. It follows in the footsteps of games like “Hades II” and “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” building on an already strong foundation while adding online co-op for up to four players. This feature slightly alters the game’s rhythm but offers a fantastic way to conquer the spire together.

A session of “Slay the Spire II” mirrors the original: players navigate three acts along a winding map, form a deck, acquire relics, and face enemies, elites, and bosses. The game maintains a turn-based style, allowing players ample time for decisions, with visible enemy plans encouraging strategic choices. Multiplayer permits simultaneous turns, presenting new planning avenues but necessitating effective communication.

My wife, an avid fan of “Slay the Spire,” and I secured a victory on our second run. I played as the new Necrobinder, focusing on weakening enemies, while she, as the Silent, unleashed flurries of shivs.

Beyond battles, “Slay the Spire II” promotes teamwork, offering the option to heal a friend at campfires. Players vote on map paths and can doodle on the map, a feature my wife embraced during shop visits.

Our successful run, due to extensive coordination, took longer than solo plays. Defeating the Act 3 boss was incredibly rewarding, though co-op’s need for separate devices was a downside. Despite this, multiplayer adds enjoyable dynamics, and I’m eager to tackle more challenges and experience the amusing doodles ahead.
