That’s a significant amount of money. By Alex Perry on March 27, 2026
If you invested $500 in a PlayStation 5 at its 2020 launch, it’s the lowest price it will ever be. Sony announced on their blog that PS5 prices are going up globally, including in the U.S., starting April 2. The company cited current economic conditions, likely hinting at factors like Donald Trump’s tariff policies and the global AI competition driving up electronics prices.
New USD prices are as follows:
– Base PS5: $649.99
– PS5 Digital Edition: $599.99
– PS5 Pro: $899.99
This increase, plus a previous hike last August, means prices are $150-$200 more than at launch. The PlayStation Portal also went up to $249.99. Xbox consoles saw a price rise last year, though the Nintendo Switch 2 remains unaffected for now.
Historically, console prices decrease over time, with cheaper versions introduced to broaden access. However, tariffs and AI have changed this trend.
