Sony Halts Memory Card Sales Amid Shortages

2 Min Read

Sony Japan announced today that it has ceased accepting orders for SD and CFexpress cards from both dealers and consumers. As of March 27, 2026, nearly all products in Sony’s CFexpress and SD memory card lines are affected by this decision. These lines include CFexpress Type A, Type B, and SDXC/SDHC cards, though some models of Type B and low-end SF-UZ series SD cards are still being produced, and may be available until current stock is depleted, according to PetaPixel.

This suspension of orders applies to both the company’s authorized dealers and general consumers “for the foreseeable future.” The announcement coincides with Sony’s decision to raise worldwide PS5 prices.

The decision was announced on Sony Japan’s website and mentioned on affected product listings in their online store. Sony attributes this move to the ongoing solid-state memory shortage and “other factors,” potentially including a helium shortage due to the conflict in Iran impacting chip manufacturers.

Sony expressed gratitude for the ongoing support of their products and cited global semiconductor shortages and other factors as reasons for the anticipated shortfall in meeting the demand for CFexpress and SD memory cards. They plan to review the order suspension based on future supply conditions and will provide updates on their product information page.
