Sony’s enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology is now available for various PS5 Pro titles, including Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Silent Hill 2, and more. Digital Foundry reviewed these updates, noting significant improvements in reducing issues like shimmering and flickering, resulting in sharper in-game visuals.
This upgrade stems from AMD and Sony’s Project Amethyst, which enhances game graphics by rendering at a lower resolution and applying AI to upscale each frame. This method maintains high quality on the same hardware without dropping the framerate. The latest PS5 system update, including the PSSR enhancements, starts rolling out on March 17. Sony indicates these improvements will also benefit AMD’s upcoming FSR update.
PSSR, similar to AMD’s AI-powered FSR 4 for PCs, was introduced last year, debuting with Resident Evil Requiem. In addition to the titles already mentioned, games such as Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Alan Wake 2, Control, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Nioh 3, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 will support PSSR on PS5 Pro once the update is released.
Moreover, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 will receive patches with the PSSR update soon, while Crimson Desert will implement the technology at its launch on March 19, according to Sony. Users can toggle the updated tech on or off for PS5 Pro games that support PSSR, though results may vary.
