Former Apple employee Brett Levenson joined Facebook in 2019 to tackle its content moderation issues during the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Initially thinking technology could solve the problem, Levenson found deeper issues with human reviewers, who had limited time and resources, resulting in suboptimal decisions. Frustrated, he developed “policy as code” to automate this process, leading to the creation of Moonbounce, a company offering advanced content moderation by turning policy documents into executable software. Moonbounce secured $12 million in funding, co-led by Amplify Partners and StepStone Group, to enhance safety across user-generated and AI content platforms. Their technology processes evaluations in milliseconds, adjusting content exposure according to risk level. With 40 million daily reviews, Moonbounce assists companies like Channel AI and Civitai by making safety part of their product appeal. Levenson, alongside former Apple colleague Ash Bhardwaj, aims at improving chatbot intervention through “iterative steering,” redirecting harmful discussions to beneficial paths. He highlights that while Moonbounce could integrate well into larger platforms like Meta, he values broad technology access over restrictive acquisition.
