Nintendo, alongside Illumination, delivers a visually impressive yet narratively bland film. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” more a reimagined mix than a pure adaptation of the 2007 Wii game, weaves elements from various Mario games, triggering nostalgia through stunning visuals and cameos. It continues from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” picking up with Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) as galactic heroes. With Bowser miniaturized, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) enlist Mario and Luigi, alongside Yoshi (Donald Glover), to tackle new crises. Trouble arises as Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie) schemes to reunite with Bowser, focusing on Rosalina (Brie Larson) to build a weapon. The film stands out from its predecessor by highlighting Peach, offering action scenes depicting her backstory and bond with Mario. While “Super Mario Galaxy” elements appear in the movie’s interstellar scenes featuring Peach and Toad, it diverges from the source material’s story. Introducing characters like Honey Queen (Issa Rae) and Wart (Luis Guzmán), and featuring cameos from Nintendo franchises, the film seems to hint at a larger cinematic universe, detracting from character development. Despite a straightforward plot, the movie’s brisk pace caters to short attention spans, mostly appealing to younger audiences. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” also features Kevin Michael Richardson, Juliet Jelenic, and Ed Skudder, and releases on April 1st.
