Turing Award Special: A Discussion with Martin Hellman – Software Engineering Daily

2 Min Read

Martin Hellman, an American cryptographer, is renowned for co-inventing public-key cryptography alongside Whitfield Diffie and Ralph Merkle in the 1970s. Their innovative Diffie-Hellman key exchange method enabled secure communication over insecure channels, forming the basis of modern encryption protocols. Additionally, Hellman has made significant contributions to cybersecurity policy and discussions on nuclear risk ethics. His work has significantly influenced cryptography, internet security, and global information protection.

In 2015, Martin, together with Whitfield Diffie, received the Turing Award “for inventing and promulgating both asymmetric public-key cryptography, including its application to digital signatures, and a practical cryptographic key-exchange method.”

In this episode, he joins Gregor Vand to discuss his life and career. You can access a free copy of Martin and Dorothie Hellman’s book in PDF format here.

Gregor Vand, a security-focused technologist, is the founder and CTO of Mailpass. Previously, he served as a CTO in cybersecurity, cyber insurance, and general software engineering firms. Based in Asia Pacific for nearly a decade, his profile can be found at vand.hk.
