Amazon announced that Uber is expanding its AWS cloud services contract to integrate more ride-sharing features using Amazon’s chips. Uber will enhance its use of AWS’s Graviton CPU and trial Trainium3, AWS’s Nvidia competitor AI chip. This move isn’t primarily a threat to Nvidia but showcases Amazon’s competition with Google and Oracle in the cloud sector. In 2023, Uber transitioned its I.T. infrastructure to Oracle and Google’s clouds. Uber mentioned in a blog post that it began shifting workloads to the cloud using OCI and Google Cloud Platform, incorporating ARM-powered compute instances. Ampere, founded by Renee James, was backed by Oracle. Oracle once owned a significant part of Ampere but sold its stake for $2.7 billion pre-tax gain after Softbank acquired Ampere. Oracle is now selling bonds to fund data centers for OpenAI and Stargate, preferring to buy rather than design chips in-house. AWS’s contract with Uber expands AWS’s in-house chip use with companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Apple. Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, stated that Trainium is a multibillion-dollar business.
