UmbrelOS is a Debian-based home cloud operating system with a user-friendly web interface, designed for devices like Raspberry Pi SBCs, mini PCs, and older computers.
It was first released in 2020, but came to my attention today when I noticed it was supported as an operating system for the Pironman 5 Pro Max enclosure for Raspberry Pi 5. Originally, it was developed to run a Bitcoin full node on a Raspberry Pi seamlessly, but it later evolved into a home cloud OS, competing against other open-source platforms like OpenMediaVault and CasaOS/ZimaOS.
UmbrelOS features:
– Intuitive web dashboard accessible via umbrel.local or the device’s IP.
– Umbrel App Store with over 300 apps, including those for media storage like Nextcloud and Immich, media streaming with Jellyfin, home automation via Home Assistant, password management with Vaultwarden, Bitcoin and Lightning nodes, ad-blocking with AdGuard Home, and AI tools like Ollama and OpenClaw.
– Self-hosting — Applications run in Docker containers.
– Automatic encrypted backups to another Umbrel device, a network NAS, or an external USB drive.
– Rewind in Files — Restore specific files and folders from previous points in time.
– Network mounts in the Files app.
– External USB storage and formatting for AMD64.
– GPU acceleration for applications.
– Supports Raspberry Pi 4/5, x86 64-bit (AMD64) systems, and virtual machines.
Source code, instructions, and OS images are available on GitHub. While most users may deploy UmbrelOS on their hardware, Umbrel also offers the Umbrel Home and Umbrel Pro devices, complete with the same software but with priority support. Features such as WiFi, data migration, and external USB storage support have been confirmed to work on these devices.
The Umbrel Home pairs a quad-core Intel N150 CPU with 16GB of DDR5 RAM and up to a 4TB SSD, offering Gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports, while the Umbrel Pro comes with an octa-core Intel Core i3-N300 CPU, 16GB LPDDR5, up to 32TB SSD storage (4x 8TB), 2.5GbE networking, and USB 3.2 ports.
