Mozilla has unveiled a new capability in the most recent version of Firefox for iPhone that leverages Apple Intelligence functionalities in iOS 26. This capability, referred to as “shake-to-summarize,” enables users to swiftly create summaries of web pages by merely shaking their device.
For those using an iPhone 15 Pro or newer operating on iOS 26, the summary is generated directly on the device, utilizing on-device processing for optimal efficiency. However, individuals with older iPhone models can still utilize this feature; in such cases, the text is transmitted to Mozilla’s AI server for summarization before being sent back to the device.
The shake-to-summarize capability aims to simplify the process of extracting essential information from extensive web pages. For example, a demonstration illustrates how a cluttered recipe webpage can be condensed into a succinct bullet-point list of ingredients and instructions with just a shake of the device. Alternatively, users can also enable the feature by tapping the thunderbolt icon found in the address bar.
Mozilla asserts that this capability can summarize web pages containing up to 5,000 words, making it a valuable tool for users seeking rapid access to information, whether for recipes, articles, or other lengthy materials. The launch of this feature starts with English language web pages in the United States, with intentions to broaden to additional languages and regions in the future.
As with any feature powered by AI, users are encouraged to exercise caution and assess the reliability of the produced summaries.
