Volkswagen Shifts Focus Back to Gas-Powered SUVs, Halts All-Electric ID.4 Sales in US

Volkswagen will cease production of the all-electric ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee factory as it reallocates resources towards high-volume vehicles like the upcoming Atlas SUV. U.S. customers can purchase the ID.4 until existing inventory is depleted, expected to last into 2027.

Volkswagen, alongside other traditional automakers, is retreating from extensive plans to transition from gas-powered to electric vehicles due to lower-than-expected demand and the removal of the $7,500 federal tax credit. While EVs are still selling, budget-conscious buyers often choose used or lower-priced models. VW began producing the ID.4 in 2020, which initially sold for around $45,000 but faced challenges, particularly with software. However, a 2023 refresh revived sales.

Despite some successes, overall ID.4 sales showed inconsistency, with a peak in 2023 at over 37,000 units, a subsequent 55% decline, and a partial recovery in 2025 with a 31% increase to 22,373 units, still below past highs. Globally, VW reported a slight decrease in EV deliveries in 2025 to about 382,000 units. Nevertheless, the ID.4 didn’t maintain traction.

Volkswagen plans to introduce future models at its U.S. facility, emphasizing the second-generation Atlas set for model year 2027, with production beginning this summer and availability by fall. A company spokesperson assured there are roles for ID.4 production employees in Atlas manufacturing, with early retirement options available.

VW is dedicated to the U.S. market, though excluding immediate plans for an EV. The company is exploring new products designed to meet U.S. consumer demand, presumably a more affordable compact SUV. Volkswagen Group of America President and CEO Kjell Gruner affirmed the Chattanooga plant’s ongoing strategic importance.

VW indicates a potential return of the ID.4 to North America without a specified timeline or details, with affordability likely a priority.
