Waymo Launches Robotaxi Services at San Antonio International Airport

1 Min Read

Waymo’s robotaxi service launches at San Antonio International Airport, their first Texas airport, offering curbside drop-offs and ride-share area pickups. Previously, Waymo has been active at Phoenix Sky Harbor, San Francisco, and San Jose Mineta airports. The San Antonio service, initiated in February, isn’t yet fully public, operating under an invitation system similar to Dallas, Houston, and Orlando. With tens of thousands on the waitlist, full public access is anticipated soon. Waymo plans cautious expansion to 20 cities, including Tokyo and London, with services currently in 10 cities, providing over 500,000 weekly paid rides. This year, the company expects to introduce rides in the Zeekr-built Ojai van. Data claims their robotaxis are safer than human drivers, yet Waymo faces issues, including illegal passing of school buses under NHTSA and NTSB investigations and working towards solutions with local Austin officials. An incident involving a robotaxi hitting a child in Santa Monica, resulting in minor injuries, is under investigation. Waymo’s ground operations involve “remote assistance” staff in the U.S. and Philippines and “roadside assistance” teams in emergencies, as detailed by TechCrunch.
