We Consulted Experts on Crafting a Resume for the AI Hiring Era

As AI-driven hiring becomes more prevalent, tips for “hacking” your resume are spreading on social media. With job search platforms using artificial intelligence to screen applications, candidates aim to optimize their resumes for these filters.

We spoke with job search experts about creating AI-optimized resumes and what benefits applicants. Hayden Field, a senior AI reporter at The Verge, interviewed representatives from Indeed, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Greenhouse, and Hilke Schellmann, author of The Algorithm. Their consensus: Resume hacks won’t significantly help with AI systems.

A typical method is “keyword stuffing,” which involves embedding keywords from job listings into resumes, sometimes hidden in white text. Glassdoor’s chief economist, Daniel Zhao, notes this might bypass the initial AI filter but often fails during human review.

“I saw a resume with hidden white text as a hiring manager. The system highlighted it, revealing its irrelevance to the candidate’s skills or experience. Using unrelated information complicates explaining your qualifications to an employer.”

Everyone we interviewed emphasized that personalizing your application has become increasingly crucial.

“Remember you’re creating your resume for both an algorithm and a person,” explains Priya Rathod, workplace trends editor at Indeed.
