When Startups Transform into Family Enterprises

This season on Build Mode, we explore what it takes to craft a top-tier founding team. This week, we delve into co-founder dynamics and the complexities of launching a startup with family. Building with a family member or spouse brings advantages like inherent trust and continuous commitment, but it also poses challenges with all the startup risk concentrated in one household.

Build Mode’s Isabelle Johannessen spoke with Hala Jalwan and Alessio Tresanti, married co-founders of the AI procurement startup Rivio. Both are passionate about fully committing to their ideas and have a history of collaborative ventures. When Rivio was conceived, they were confident in their joint ability and willingness to take it forward.

As Rivio expanded, they identified two key insights: the necessity for co-founders to have distinct roles and the importance of a third co-founder to act as a mediator. Rivio’s third co-founder, CTO Leo Larrere, perfectly complements the team. According to Tresanti, Larrere often brings balance to discussions and helps set boundaries.

In the latter part of the episode, Johannessen chats with Anna Sun, co-founder of Nowadays, an AI tool for corporate event planning, co-launched with her sister Amy after they graduated from MIT. Sun highlighted how they formed their team with friends and ex-colleagues, fostering a community-centric culture. The sibling co-founders and their team enjoy profound trust.

Sun shared, “As sisters, our deep trust eliminates concerns like, ‘Am I being too direct?’ A shared upbringing gives us common values, allowing us to efficiently navigate feedback.”

These dialogues illuminate how founders can forge a robust and harmonious team by maintaining a strong foundation of trust, clear role delineation, and respectful conflict navigation.
