Wide foldable iPhone dummy appears amid delay rumors

The iPhone Fold has been seen alongside iPhone 18 Pro dummies, though it might launch months later.

We may have our first glimpse at the unusually wide iPhone Fold, as journalist Sonny Dickson released photos of a dummy unit of the foldable device, accompanied by similar models of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. This design leak occurs amid reports that early engineering trials of the foldable have experienced production issues, potentially delaying its release compared to other iPhones this year.

Dickson, known for obtaining accurate dummy models of Apple and Samsung phones used by case manufacturers, shared images of the foldable unit on Bluesky. The photos show the device from both sides, but the interior reveals little about the actual design, including any selfie camera or Face ID sensor arrangement. The exterior displays two rear cameras on a raised, pill-shaped island that spans two-thirds of the phone’s notably wide body.

Dickson hasn’t provided actual measurements for the dummy unit, but it appears more squat and wider than other book-style foldables seen so far. Its design is somewhat reminiscent of Google’s first-gen Pixel Fold, though it looks even wider. This design choice might seem unusual, but Samsung is also reportedly developing a “Wide Fold” version to be released this year, indicating this form factor might be gaining traction.

The question remains which company will launch first. Apple was widely expected to reveal its first foldable iPhone alongside the 18 Pro and Pro Max at the September launch event, with the base iPhone 18 following in 2027. However, this timeline could be at risk. Nikkei Asia reports that initial production has faced “engineering challenges” taking longer to resolve than anticipated, possibly delaying the first shipment by several months.

“Apple and the supply chain are under time pressure, and current solutions are insufficient to fully address the engineering challenges,” a source told Nikkei. “More time is needed.” This reported delay aligns with a recent prediction by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, suggesting the foldable device might ship after the release of the two Pro iPhones, even if it is unveiled alongside them.
