Threads already has over 400 million monthly users, but Meta aims to increase that number further. This week, the company launched a new feature making it easier for Threads users to share posts on Instagram Stories, leveraging Instagram’s larger user base to attract more people to Meta’s X competitor.
On Thursday, the company announced a feature that allows sharing a Threads post to your Instagram Story directly from the Threads app, previewing how it will look on your Story without leaving the app.
Previously, the app allowed users to share any Threads post to their Instagram Story similarly to resharing an Instagram post to a Story. It also provided options to share posts to your Instagram Feed or DMs.
Meta’s Twitter-like app Threads initially launched in July 2023, quickly growing its user base due to its connection with Instagram. Users signed up using their Instagram credentials, allowing Threads to automatically fill in account details like username, bio, photo, verification status, and followers.
Users could instantly follow accounts they already followed on Instagram with one tap, and those not yet on Threads would be notified.
Following its launch, Meta heavily leveraged its larger social platforms to grow Threads, displaying popular Threads posts on Facebook and adding a carousel of Threads posts on Instagram to boost engagement. They also enabled cross-posting from Instagram and Facebook to Threads, which helped increase adoption.
These efforts have been successful. Last month, data from Similarweb showed that Threads now has more daily mobile users than Elon Musk’s X, though X remains dominant on the web. Threads’ overall numbers have steadily grown, doubling from 200 million monthly active users in August 2024 to 400 million by August 2025. In October, Meta announced that Threads reached 150 million daily active users.
