Essential information

  • YouTube Premium Lite is beginning to roll out background play and downloads for “most videos” on the service.
  • The platform indicates that this has commenced where Lite is offered as of today (Feb 24) and will proceed over the “upcoming weeks.”
  • YouTube Premium Lite debuted last March at $7.99, but significantly lacked these two features that are being introduced now.

Recently, YouTube Premium has been implementing changes, and its latest update at the start of this week signifies enhancements for its less expensive subscription option.

In a blog entry, YouTube revealed that its Premium Lite tier is gaining two new features for subscribers. The platform states that Lite subscribers will soon see Background Play and Downloads available as part of their subscription. Background Play is relatively simple; users can watch their videos without interruptions from ads, offline, and in the background on their devices.

Regarding these new features included in the subscription plan, YouTube Premium mentions that this pertains to “most videos.” It clarifies that these features apply to “most non-music content, except for Shorts. Ads may still emerge when browsing or searching.” Generally, everything should function quickly and efficiently, allowing you to access content with minimal hassle.
