YouTube’s TV Takeover Continues with 24/7 Streaming ‘Stations’

As YouTube embraces FAST channels, creators will soon be able to launch linear streaming channels. Coachella’s return to YouTube includes not just live performances but also Stations, 24/7 linear streams with videos from festival artists. Stations are akin to FAST channels, offering passive viewing without the need to choose content actively. YouTube’s Kurt Wilms highlights the convenience of hands-free, continuous streaming.

Recently, YouTube began testing these stations with about 40 artists, aiming for a broader release. Creators like Bruno Mars have adopted this feature to promote music. Unlike user-driven livestream attempts requiring complex setups, Stations allow creators to start streams effortlessly through YouTube’s studio. Though not ready for full creator access yet, YouTube plans to democratize and broaden the feature.

Alongside Stations, YouTube is enhancing its TV experience, having introduced conversational AI tools for smart TVs. These tools let users inquire about video content using voice commands. As YouTube now accounts for 12.5% of TV viewing, it integrates AI across platforms, defying typical voice search restrictions imposed by smart TV systems.

Additionally, YouTube is developing TV Companion, a second-screen feature allowing phones logged into the same account to provide video information without manual pairing. This feature, along with continued support for traditional casting, aims to boost TV engagement, with a rollout expected soon.
