Five New Capabilities in iOS 26’s CarPlay That Revolutionize the Experience

Apple isn’t holding back with CarPlay in iOS 26. Following a fully packed iOS 18 update last year, Cupertino has revealed a reimagined design experience for its vision of a vehicle infotainment system, utilizing the new Liquid Glass design language.

During the WWDC 2025 keynote, Apple also launched several new features that are set to arrive in CarPlay with iOS 26. Here’s everything we’ve gathered so far.

## Liquid Glass experience arrives for CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra

Apple has just introduced CarPlay Ultra, which entirely occupies a vehicle’s panels, and it’s already receiving an update in iOS 26. The company has included a new “translucent material that reflects and refracts its environment” as part of the revamped UI experience. This redesign applies to both existing CarPlay experiences.

Icons, wallpapers, and interactions now appear more visually appealing than ever. They are also more consistent with the rest of Apple’s operating systems.

## Additional CarPlay features in iOS 26

In addition to the refreshed design, the iOS 26 CarPlay update introduces several enhancements:

– **Messages app:** Driving rule number one: refrain from texting and driving. With this update, you’ll be able to Tapback to respond to messages. Pinned conversations are finally making their way to CarPlay.

– **Widgets:** Widgets play a fundamental role in the CarPlay Ultra experience, and they’re now enhanced in the standard version as well. You can personalize the widget screen for HomeKit controls and calendar events (these are the only instances Apple has showcased so far).

– **Live Activities:** With Live Activities support, CarPlay users can monitor crucial information without losing track of their route. You can swiftly switch songs, track a flight, and more.

– **Incoming calls:** iOS 26 modifies the incoming call UI to make it more streamlined. This helps to keep critical route details visible.

These features will also be included in CarPlay Ultra, which Apple claims will appear “even more stunning with the new design.” Stay tuned to BGR for the latest updates on iOS 26.
