Investigating the Possibility of AI Awareness: Present Situation and Prospective Opportunities

$500B Stargate AI initiative currently underway. Nonetheless, each advancement achieved by AI models has been accompanied by apprehension regarding the potential for these advanced computer systems to attain consciousness and thus pose a threat — we’ve all encountered “Terminator 2” or “2001: A Space Odyssey,” we understand the concept.

The stir was ignited by Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton during a discussion with LBC. Hinton, revered as the Godfather of AI due to his contributions to the development of artificial neural networks, resigned from his position at Google to freely discuss the hazards of AI. In the conversation, he remarked that AI like ChatGPT already exhibits a type of consciousness and may possess subjective experiences, although not everyone concurs with his viewpoint.

Murray Shanahan, lead scientist at Google DeepMind and a professor emeritus of AI at Imperial College London, informed the BBC, “We find ourselves in a peculiar situation of constructing these highly intricate entities, without a clear theory of how they perform the extraordinary feats they are capable of.” He added, “Thus, gaining a deeper comprehension of their functioning will empower us to guide them toward our desired outcomes and guarantee their safety.” Yet, how secure are they?
