HBO Max Reveals Initiatives to Curb Password Sharing

Deadline reports that JB Perrette, who leads the streaming segment at Warner Bros. Discovery, stated that the organization will begin implementing more definitive actions to curb unauthorized password sharing. Perrette’s comments were made during the company’s earnings conference call earlier this week.

Perrette noted that the notifications given to users regarding password sharing have been quite lenient in recent months. However, that communication is about to shift to a more direct and assertive approach. “You will actually begin to notice the messaging,” Perrette mentioned, “which has been rather soft and easily dismissible until now, will evolve to a more fixed manner requiring users to take action instead of it being a voluntary choice.”

HBO Max has been planning to tackle the password sharing issue for quite a while. Back in early 2024, it unveiled a multi-year strategy aimed at gradually addressing the concern. As part of the initial initiative, users suspected of misusing their HBO Max password received a notification offering options to add someone else to their account. Now, almost two years later, the leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery is poised to enforce stricter measures.
