Just a few weeks after the rollout of iOS 18.6 and watchOS 11.6, Apple has introduced iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1. These updated versions of the software reinstate the blood oxygen monitoring feature that had been removed from American Apple Watch models following a legal dispute between Masimo and Apple.
Towards the end of 2023, this legal conflict had briefly compelled Apple to pause sales of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Then, at the start of 2024, the company resumed the sale of these smartwatches but without the blood oxygen monitoring capability. It was even more disappointing for users, as any necessary repairs on an Apple Watch would lead to the loss of this previously incorporated feature.
In a press announcement shared earlier today, Apple revealed that these owners will now be able to access “newly designed blood oxygen features by updating their paired iPhone to iOS 18.6.1 and their Apple Watch to watchOS 11.6.1.” The company stated that the data collected will be processed and analyzed on the iPhone, with the outcomes displayed in the Respiratory section of the Health app.
