Natural Resources Canada indicates that the nation experiences approximately 8,000 wildfires annually, affecting more than 2.1 million hectares. These fires can happen in nearly any region of the country, but they are less frequent in the northern areas due to cooler temperatures. Roughly half of all wildfires in Canada are triggered by lightning.
Advancements in technology have enhanced our safety during wildfire situations, with tools such as the Google Maps feature to track the movement of fires. Nonetheless, the smoke produced by these wildfires travels across the Canadian border into the United States, impacting the health of those in its trajectory. Only through collaboration between the two countries can the risks associated with wildfire smoke be reduced.
