Proton Unveils Security Enhancement for Emergency Account Access by Relatives and Friends


Proton Pass, a credential manager; Proton VPN, a virtual private network service; a variety of productivity tools (Calendar, Drive, and Docs); and Proton Lumo, an AI-driven chatbot. All these services can be accessed through the same Proton account, with premium subscriptions offering enhanced features and increased limits.

However, the confidential data that a Proton account secures with robust encryption can become inaccessible to anyone if an emergency arises that incapacitates the user, or if the account owner passes away. This will change beginning Thursday, as Proton revealed a new Emergency Access feature that permits paid Proton account users to designate up to five friends and family members as trusted contacts who can access the Proton account during emergencies.

How Proton Emergency Access operates
