As reported by TechCrunch, the Meta subsidiary revised its Business API policy last week to prohibit other chatbots from its platforms, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Luzia, Poke, and various other AI companies that may utilize WhatsApp’s infrastructure to facilitate communications with their assistants.
Meta assured TechCrunch that this modification will not affect applications that utilize the WhatsApp API to deliver customer support where an AI might interact with users. The subsequent section in WhatsApp’s Business API terms clarifies that Meta will restrict general-use chatbots:
“Providers and developers of artificial intelligence or machine learning technologies, encompassing but not limited to extensive language models, generative artificial intelligence platforms, general-purpose artificial intelligence assistants, or analogous technologies as determined by Meta at its sole discretion (“AI Providers”), are strictly barred from accessing or employing the WhatsApp Business Solution, whether directly or indirectly, for the aims of providing, delivering, offering, selling, or otherwise making such technologies available when such technologies are the primary (rather than incidental or ancillary) functionality being offered for use, as judged by Meta at its sole discretion.”
