Taylor Sheridan, both of whom are reportedly so strong-willed that they opted to leave for more favorable opportunities.
After experiencing disagreements at times, Costner exited the series prematurely. Sheridan, for his own reasons, has finalized an agreement to part ways with Paramount for NBCUniversal when his existing contract concludes at the end of 2028.
In a 2024 interview with Deadline, Costner articulated his perspective on a narrative that, by that time, had started to feed a swirling rumor mill, stoked by journalists like Puck’s Matt Belloni who portrayed Costner as somewhat difficult on set (a topic we’ve reported on previously). To Deadline, Costner expressed his annoyance with how the situation was being portrayed publicly, clarifying that “it wasn’t accurate” — emphasizing that the disintegration of “Yellowstone’s” production timeline was what ultimately led to his departure.

Costner revealed that he originally established a contract covering Seasons 5, 6, and 7 (the show ultimately concluded with Season 5). After considerable negotiations, Paramount returned with a significantly altered proposal: The plan was to divide Season 5 into two segments, with the possibility of a Season 6 later. The situation was further complicated by “Horizon: An American Saga,” the Western film franchise that Costner was passionate about — yet he insisted that “Yellowstone” was always his priority, fitting “Horizon” around the available time in the TV schedule.
“They just kept shifting their timelines,” Costner remarked about the decision-makers of “Yellowstone,” asserting that it was the instability in production that hindered his future on the series. In a June 2024 Instagram update, Costner informed followers: “Hello everyone. I want to reach out and let you know that after this extensive year and a half of working on ‘Horizon’ and fulfilling all the requirements, and considering ‘Yellowstone’ — that cherished series that I adore, that I know you cherish — I just realized that I’m not going to be able to proceed with Season 5b … I appreciate the bond we’ve been able to cultivate, and I’ll see you at the movies.”
