Total Recall (1990)

While this list could be entirely made up of films based on Philip K. Dick’s short stories, we’ve selected one of our favorites to keep it concise. Although the 1982 film “Blade Runner” is more renowned for its inspiration from Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?,” it doesn’t quite fit within this selection. Nevertheless, “Total Recall” still delivers 113 minutes of absurd, mind-bending sci-fi action, loosely adapted from Dick’s 1966 short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.” The 1990 version of “Total Recall” — distinct from the 2012 remake that follows a similar plot — stars the iconic Arnold Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid — a man living in the year 2084 who yearns to travel to Mars, which is now colonized.

Quaid visits Rekall, a business that embeds false memories in customers, hoping to experience a taste of the red planet. However, the situation deteriorates swiftly during the procedure, propelling Quaid to discern reality from implanted memories. Alongside Schwarzenegger in the lead role, “Total Recall” features Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox, and Rachel Ticotin. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, known for 1987’s “RoboCop” and the cult classic “Starship Troopers” from 1997, the film boasts an 81% Tomatometer rating and a 79% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. You can currently stream the film on Paramount+ and Philo.
