Variety).

Similar to Robin Hood, however, this is all part of a distant past, as Crowe’s portrayal of the iconic archer has gained fresh attention on HBO Max. As per FlixPatrol, the critically panned medieval adventure is now among the streamer’s top ten. But what is it about Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood” that resonates now after all these years?

Perhaps it’s because there are other Robins making moves or preparing for action this year, along with the fact that Crowe himself has been endorsing the film. Indeed, it seems that, even after all this time, the Oscar-winning actor feels that “Robin Hood” was not treated fairly, and that an alternative version of the film is significantly better than what was initially presented to audiences.

Russell Crowe claims we were cheated with Robin Hood

This month, Russell Crowe took to X in reply to @CinemaTweets1 commending the film that still somehow remains overshadowed by “Gladiator,” and seemingly hasn’t changed perception in a decade. The original tweet stated, “Ridley Scott’s ‘Robin Hood’ faced numerous unjust comparisons to ‘Gladiator’ that led to ‘Robin Hood’ not receiving the appreciation it rightfully deserves. This is a remarkable film with a stellar cast that runs deep. Russell Crowe is also exceptionally good here. Definitely worth seeing.”

Crowe replied, championing the film. “The director’s cut is the version we all believed we were putting out. However, 17 minutes were trimmed for the theatrical release. A minute can feel like an eternity onscreen. Envision any of your beloved films with 17 minutes of vital emotional substance missing … watch the director’s cut.”

Sadly, the director’s cut isn’t available on HBO Max, but that doesn’t imply the original film lacks value. While critics had plenty to critique regarding Crowe’s English accent, which the actor has publicly defended, it didn’t take away from the impressive visuals Scott is known for or the supporting cast, featuring “Black Bag” star Cate Blanchett as Marian and the relatively unknown, soon-to-be “Moon Knight,” Oscar Isaac as Prince John. Crowe’s “Robin Hood” is a decent watch (and this opinion comes from a Nottingham-born writer), but we may be headed toward new and superior versions as early as this year.
