USB drives are widely used for good reason: they offer affordable storage options. In addition, they are compact, making them portable. Plus, their user-friendliness cannot be overlooked. You simply connect them, transfer files from your computer to the drive, wait for the process to finish, and then disconnect. Because of these benefits, numerous users have adopted flash drives for local backups. However, be aware that your information may be susceptible to drive malfunctions or even theft by cybercriminals.
Flash drives, as their name implies, utilize flash memory for storing data. This is the same technology found in solid-state drives (SSDs), but there are key distinctions between them. SSDs possess multi-level cells (MLC), which enable far more write cycles in comparison to a flash drive.
Moreover, SSDs utilize superior wear-leveling techniques. This results in a more balanced usage of the drive rather than focusing wear on a particular section. These protective features are often absent in most budget-friendly flash drives. Despite the similar technology, flash drives should not be viewed as equivalents of SSDs, nor should they be relied upon as reliable backup solutions.
