the continuous demand for additional space, energy, and technology to establish these massive AI facilities, SpaceX’s CEO Elon Musk indicated in 2025 that AI computers located in outer space would represent the most cost-effective solution within five years, indicating a significant shift in future technology. Musk’s forecast probably aligns with SpaceX’s goals; however, Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, is considerably more reserved about this timeline. In the latest earnings report from the company, Huang remarked that the current economic conditions are problematic for space-based data centers, “but it’s going to improve over time.” Huang points out that space itself differs significantly from life “down here.”
These aren’t the sole factors behind Huang’s skepticism regarding extraterrestrial data centers; the expenses associated with departing Earth remain prohibitively high, the speed at which one can replace a faulty component in an AI data center would be much slower, and developing an effective cooling strategy could prove to be more difficult than anticipated. Nevertheless, the Nvidia executive isn’t dismissing the possibility of relocating AI data centers into space, but we may be much further from that reality than Elon Musk envisions.
