Motivated by Bishop from “Aliens,” Spiner’s portrayal of Data premiered in 1987 after vying for the role against “Predator” actor Kevin Peter Hall. Securing the role solidified Spiner’s presence in the series and four additional films associated with “The Next Generation” cast, including “Star Trek: First Contact,” a personal favorite of Patrick Stewart. Spiner’s interpretation secured Data’s identity as the android keen on grasping humanity and aspiring to be more human himself, which resonated with viewers. Nonetheless, as remarkable as this role may be, Spiner has confessed that the primary downside of the job is that, throughout the years, it’s predominantly what he’s been known for.
In a conversation with Vice, Spiner shared, “What troubles me — and it occurs frequently — is when people spot me and yell, ‘DATA! DATA!’ I’m okay with being recognized. I merely wish they shouted, ‘The guy who played Data!’.” While it’s a reasonable drawback of taking the role, it’s astonishing that it eclipses the extensive makeup routine that transforms the actor into an android. Interestingly, that was one aspect the “Star Trek” icon found manageable, even if it was bothersome.
