adult animation (some of which is exclusive to Netflix) like “Primal” or “The Midnight Gospel” has been making significant strides and rapidly evolving over the last decade; “Scavengers Reign” undoubtedly achieved new heights. Merging science fiction with a rich ecosystem and extraterrestrial wildlife, the show’s universe was so filled with imaginative and extraordinary concepts that it ultimately proved too demanding to appeal to (and retain) the average viewer.

So much so that HBO Max couldn’t risk continuing it, as its low ratings didn’t justify the production expenses. Consequently, the series was abruptly cancelled following its 12-episode inaugural season, joining other one-season shows on Max, and although Netflix picked it up for streaming and a potential continuation, the viewership numbers once again fell short of supporting and justifying a renewal. Nevertheless, “Scavengers Reign” stands as an unlikely, if underappreciated, masterpiece that may have arrived too early to seize the cultural moment.

Rooted in the creators’ 2016 short film, “Scavengers,” the series centers on a small group as their cargo vessel, Demeter 227, crash-lands on the alien and unexplored planet of Vesta. The survivors become separated into three distinct groups, and viewers track their diverse story arcs as they attempt to navigate and endure in this new setting that possesses as much natural splendor and awe as it does unforeseen, and at times unfathomable, threats. The intricate, ever-blooming flora in conjunction with the unidentifiable creatures that inhabit and dominate this terrain are as central to the narrative as the humans audiences are invited to connect with and support.
