adding its most cutting-edge aircraft carrier since 2012 captured attention, China’s submarine initiative might wield an equally significant influence on its global aspirations.
Its advancements could bring Beijing closer to establishing a nuclear submarine fleet on par with those operated by the U.S. and Russia. Historically, China’s submarine fleet has fallen behind its competitors in both capabilities and quantity, mostly comprising loud, diesel-electric tactical submarines. However, enhancements to the Bohai shipyard have proven remarkably effective. Presently, Beijing surpasses Washington in the production of submarines. Nonetheless, China’s earlier vessels have diminished in comparison to contemporary American submarines.
First noted by Naval News in early February 2026, satellite images have provided Western analysts a preview of PLAN’s most sophisticated nuclear submarine to date. Referred to as the Type 095, this submarine is believed to be an enhancement over China’s previous classes, specifically the Type 093B and Type 094. While much remains undisclosed regarding Beijing’s clandestine submarine acquisition process, with insights on the Type 095’s missile system, torpedo configuration, and sonar functions being extremely scarce, specialists view the larger, more advanced warship as potentially China’s inaugural serious contender to the U.S.’s underwater supremacy. Likely bolstered by refined hydrodynamic shaping methods, the submarine will showcase a more spacious hull, enhanced acoustics, larger subsystems, and a quieter propulsion mechanism.
