Cristóbal Valenzuela, co-founder and CEO of AI video-generation startup Runway, valued at over $5 billion, made recent comments about AI’s role in Hollywood that may not convince the anti-AI creative crowd. Speaking at Semafor’s World Economy Summit, he suggested studios could spend $100 million on 50 films instead of one, potentially increasing output and success chances. This contrasts with the idea of film as artistic investment, proposing the industry is a numbers game where more content leads to hits.

Valenzuela acknowledged controversy around AI in creative fields but noted fast changes, believing initial skepticism stemmed from fear and misunderstanding, while now many understand AI’s capabilities. Runway has been developing AI world models to enhance creative work and has helped reduce production costs, according to him. This trend is exemplified by the $70 million “Bitcoin: Killing Satoshi” movie, the first studio-quality AI feature, which used AI to lower costs from an estimated $300 million. Amazon, Indian studios, Sony Pictures, and James Cameron also support AI for cost-cutting.

Valenzuela stated AI is impacting various stages of production, from pre-production to visual effects, though critics doubt AI scaling guarantees more great art. Runway believes scaling creativity with AI is beneficial, citing a creative crisis due to current economic incentives. Valenzuela compared video production to books, mentioning 25 million books are produced annually, which, while possibly incorrect, suggests increased content improves the world.

Runway’s goal is to saturate the market with content, trusting some will succeed. Valenzuela said the best movies are yet to be made by individuals currently without technological access.
