Nicholas Moore, who pleaded guilty to repeatedly hacking the U.S. Supreme Court’s electronic document filing system, was sentenced to a year of probation.
Moore also hacked the network of AmeriCorps, a government agency for volunteer programs, and the systems of the Department of Veterans Affairs, which provides services to military veterans.
The man boasted about his exploits on an Instagram account named @ihackedthegovernment, where he shared the personal information of those he had hacked. Moore utilized one of his victim’s credentials to access the U.S. Supreme Court’s filing system, AmeriCorps, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
He was initially facing a year in prison and a $100,000 fine in damages, but prosecutors later suggested probation instead.
“I made a mistake,” Moore said during the sentencing, according to The Hill. “I am truly sorry. I respect laws, and I want to be a good citizen.”
