Anthropic’s relationship with the Trump administration appears to be warming up

Despite being labeled a supply-chain risk by the Pentagon, Anthropic continues discussions with key Trump administration figures.

Reports indicate a warming relationship as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell advised leading banks to trial Anthropic’s Mythos model.

Co-founder Jack Clark acknowledged this, emphasizing that the supply-chain risk issue is a “narrow contracting dispute” not hindering briefings on new models.

Axios reported a meeting between Bessent, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, described by the White House as an “introductory meeting” that was “productive and constructive.”

The discussions involved potential collaborations and shared strategies to tackle technological scaling challenges, according to the White House.

Anthropic stated that Amodei met senior administration officials for a “productive discussion” on mutual priorities like cybersecurity, AI leadership, and safety.

The company looks forward to continued talks.

The conflict with the Pentagon arose from unfruitful talks on military use of Anthropic’s models, as the company aimed to preserve technology safeguards against fully autonomous weapons and extensive domestic surveillance. (OpenAI soon announced its military agreement, sparking some consumer backlash.)

The Pentagon subsequently labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk, a designation typically for foreign threats, potentially restricting government use of its models. Anthropic is contesting this in court.

However, a Trump administration source claimed that all agencies except the Department of Defense wish to use Anthropic’s technology.
