The winner of the Beijing half-marathon for humanoid robots completed the race in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, surpassing the human record of 57 minutes set by Jacob Kiplimo. While comparing robot and human times may seem inequitable, a significant improvement over last year’s top robot time of two hours and 40 minutes was noted. This year’s winner was developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor. Although another Honor robot finished in 48 minutes and 19 seconds, it was remote-controlled; the 50:26 robot was autonomous and claimed victory due to weighted scoring. Around 40% of participating robots were autonomous, while 60% were remote-controlled. Not all robots performed optimally, with some encountering issues such as falling or hitting barriers.
