Ikea and Samsung Ensure Seamless SmartThings Integration

Wasn’t the promise of Matter devices seamless integration?

Ikea’s collection of two dozen Matter-over-Thread devices has faced issues since their release. However, Samsung claims that its SmartThings platform has resolved these problems. If accurate, this means that Ikea’s sensors and complex remotes are expected to function correctly, integrate smoothly, and fit into Samsung’s home automation routines without difficulties.

To achieve this, Samsung stated it developed enhanced integrations with Ikea’s products like the scroll wheel remote, light bulbs, smart plugs, and various sensors for temperature, humidity, air quality, movement, water, and open or closed states of doors and windows. Samsung’s press release also mentions that it conducted several validation rounds with Ikea to improve connectivity stability, ensuring full compatibility within the SmartThings app. Hopefully, this resolves issues like ghosting, where devices vanish from the network or fail to connect.

Ideally, Matter should reduce the necessity for such platform-specific efforts. It’s concerning to see this level of work needed to fulfill Ikea’s vision of a smart, affordable, and reliable home experience.
