Report: Meta to Monitor Employee Mouse Movements and Keystrokes for AI Training

Meta is increasing employee surveillance in a new approach, not to monitor productivity but to gather data for AI training, according to Reuters. The company is implementing tracking software to record mouse movements and keystrokes on employees’ computers in the U.S. This initiative, named Model Capability Initiative (MCI), aims to improve AI agents’ proficiency in tasks like keyboard shortcuts. CTO Andrew Bosworth mentioned the focus on enhancing AI capabilities through internal data collection, aiming for a future where AI handles work while humans oversee it. Although it hasn’t been declared that AI will replace human workers, it’s a plausible future given past AI-related job losses. Meta assured that this data won’t affect performance reviews. Despite not explicitly stating a shift towards replacing human jobs, Meta might be moving in that direction, especially after previous layoffs. Privacy issues persist, with allegations of improper sharing of recordings and investigations into misuse of private data. Concerns have also been voiced over potential facial recognition tech in upcoming products, urging Meta to reconsider its plans.
