During its Google Cloud Next conference on Wednesday, Google announced updates for Workspace, including the integration of its AI Overviews feature into Gmail. This feature, currently used to summarize Google Search results, will now provide summaries for Gmail users at work. Gmail users can ask questions in natural language and receive concise answers without opening multiple emails.
The feature is intended for business-related queries about topics typically shared in emails, such as performance insights, project milestones, invoices, deck comments, and travel details, providing straightforward answers. AI Overview generates instant summaries from various emails and conversations.
While not everyone prefers using AI first, it is becoming standard in Google products and online. AI Overviews in Gmail will be a default setting if the company has enabled Gemini for Workspace in Gmail and Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail. End users need “Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet” and “Google Workspace smart features” enabled as well.
Initially available to consumers with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions, the feature will now be accessible to business, enterprise, and education customers through these editions:
– Business: Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
– Enterprise: Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
– Consumers: Google AI Pro and Ultra
– Other Editions: Frontline Plus
– AI Add-ons: Google AI Pro for Education
Google also announced that AI Overviews in Drive will be widely available to eligible Workspace and Google AI plans, after previously being in beta.
