The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone is known for his wacky parodies like “Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping” and the “SNL” spinoff “MacGruber.” With “Over Your Dead Body,” he ventures into darker humor, remaking Tommy Wirkola’s Norwegian dark comedy “The Trip.” Samara Weaving and Jason Segel play Lisa and Dan, a married couple planning a getaway to allegedly reconnect. However, Dan’s plotting an “alpine divorce” — a plan to kill his wife. Little does he know, Lisa has her own murderous scheme. Their deadly plans go awry when three home invaders crash their weekend.
Let the gruesome games begin. “Over Your Dead Body” delivers on dark humor and horror. Pete (Timothy Olyphant), Todd (Keith Jardine), and Allegra (Juliette Lewis) are convicts hiding in the cabin, creating chaos for Dan and Lisa. The couple must unite to survive, facing bloody violence and bone-snapping carnage.
Don’t watch “The Trip” before this version for the best experience. While the adaptation sticks closely to the original plot, writers Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney add new elements, like turning the convict trio into a pair with a lovestruck guard. “Over Your Dead Body” keeps surprises fresh for audiences. It follows a similar storyline but suits American humor, although it retains intense moments.
Timothy Olyphant stands out, stealing scenes with his range. His character Pete is sexy, silly, but terrifying, adding tension to the story. If you’re up for a twisted comedy, “Over Your Dead Body” will deliver laughs and shocks.
The film opens in theaters April 24.
