Officials in this G7 nation aim for net zero by 2050, but AI data centers pose challenges. By Chase DiBenedetto on April 27, 2026. AI data centers could emit nearly a million more tons of carbon dioxide than previously estimated, according to the UK’s governing body. Politico reports UK officials have updated estimates in the country’s “Compute Roadmap” for AI infrastructure. Previous versions suggested a peak emission of 0.142 million metric tons between 2025-2035. Now, the projection is 123 million metric tons, according to The Guardian, which is equivalent to emissions from 2.7 million people. Chi Onwurah, a parliament member, expressed concern and called for more transparency from UK leaders about AI plans’ environmental impacts. Multiple parliamentary groups are investigating these issues. Domestically, the rise in AI data centers in the U.S. has also increased global emissions, as per recent reports. Environmental groups have called for federal moratoriums on data center builds. Community opposition to local billion-dollar data center projects is growing, with some pushing for state-level bans. Meanwhile, Big Tech and major AI investors promise efforts to reduce and recycle resources, use natural gas, and offset energy costs.
