The Amazon Appstore began attracting attention when it was launched on Android devices more than a decade ago, aiming to counteract Google’s monopoly as the sole app distributor available to Android users. However, since then, the Google Play Store has only expanded further.
Although Amazon’s app store still enjoys considerable use on its own proprietary Android-based devices — such as its Fire tablets — the broader Android audience has not been depending on it, as Amazon communicated to Android Police at the time of the initial announcement. The closure of the Amazon Appstore on more extensive Android devices follows the company’s withdrawal from supporting its Windows application, which was terminated in March 2025.
