Apple has unveiled iOS 26 beta 5 and iOS 26 public beta 2 this week, presenting performance enhancements and fresh features for iPhone users keen to try out the next-generation operating system ahead of its September launch. Among the thrilling new functionalities is the incorporation of natural language search support in Apple Maps.
A code discovery in iOS 26 beta 3 hinted at a feature titled “Search the Way You Talk,” enabling users to locate places using natural language, such as “Best coffee shops with free Wi-Fi.” This capability, subtly integrated into Apple Maps in iOS 26, was not present in earlier beta versions. A prompt within the app notifies users that they can utilize natural language for searches like “Find cafes with free Wi-Fi.” However, this feature is yet to be available in Europe.
Natural language search marks a notable leap forward for Apple Maps, akin to advancements seen in products such as ChatGPT and Google Maps. Google Maps rolled out conversational language searches in February 2024, improving navigation experiences. Apple’s choice to integrate similar search capabilities in Apple Maps corresponds with its Apple Intelligence features, which drive natural language search within the Photos app.
Beyond natural language search, iOS 26 introduces additional features to Apple Maps. Preferred routes enable the iPhone to learn users’ favored paths to reach destinations, providing tailored navigation recommendations. Visited places allow the iPhone to identify and memorize locations of interest, assisting users in returning to specific spots. Apple Maps will also gain new types of incident reports in iOS 26, further enhancing the app’s utility.
