Apple TV+ is recognized for a variety of offerings. Touching comedy (“Ted Lasso”), worldwide acclaimed drama (“Slow Horses,” “Pachinko,” “Drops of God”), and speculative fiction (“Foundation,” “Silo,” “Dark Matter”). One domain where the streaming service still has potential to thrive, in my view, is within the realm of gritty crime dramas — which, at first glance, may not seem to align seamlessly with Apple TV+’s objectives. After all, aspects like gun violence, drug trafficking, homicide, and unresolved cases — that appears to be the type of content you’d likely associate more with an HBO suspense series.
However, indeed, one of the standout dramas on Apple TV+ that most likely went unnoticed by a number of subscribers operates within that very genre. “Criminal Record,” featuring Cash Jumbo alongside “Doctor Who’s” Peter Capaldi, is a crime thriller situated in London, presenting two detectives hailing from immensely different backgrounds and even eras (a young-old dynamic is evident) who clash over a cold case that could not only significantly influence their individual careers — but also resurface some long-buried secrets.
