ChatGPT App Experiences Significant Overhaul Ahead of GPT-5 Launch

OpenAI may postpone the GPT-5 launch, but the release is imminent. On Wednesday, OpenAI revealed via social media that a livestream is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT on Wednesday, August 7, with GitHub leaking the major ChatGPT enhancement a few hours prior. Additional indications suggest that GPT-5 is indeed arriving on Thursday, as OpenAI has revamped the ChatGPT user interface significantly.

OpenAI frequently updates the ChatGPT user interface. These updates generally occur alongside the rollout of new features or when OpenAI opts to streamline the prompt composition process. As a veteran ChatGPT user, I can identify UI modifications as soon as they’re activated. This was the case on Thursday morning when I noticed an even more streamlined UI for the ChatGPT web interface. The iPhone and iPad mobile applications were also updated this week to reflect that design.

By itself, the ChatGPT user interface modification wouldn’t necessarily suggest that the GPT-5 update is forthcoming. However, given the aforementioned context, it’s evident that OpenAI is setting the stage for the GPT-5 debut on Thursday. The updated UI also appears to validate one of GPT-5’s primary features: The AI should automatically determine which model to deploy without requiring explicit input from the user. Review the screenshots that follow in comparison to the top image, and you’ll quickly notice the differences.
