FreeSync, similar to Nvidia’s G-Sync, engages variable refresh rate technology. This allows the monitor to adjust its framerate according to the onscreen content to minimize screen tearing. Nevertheless, there are certain conditions to effectively utilize FreeSync.
Not every FreeSync monitor is compatible with Nvidia graphics cards. You can refer to the official Nvidia compatibility list to ascertain if your monitor qualifies, as those that do will specifically list FreeSync Compatible beside them. If your monitor is not on that list, there is still a possibility it can utilize FreeSync, but you might encounter some issues when using the feature.
Additionally, you need a fairly recent graphics card: GTX-10 series, 16-series, and RTX 20-series or newer models can take advantage of variable refresh rate. For most monitors, a DisplayPort 1.2 or higher connection is required to link it with your graphics card. In recent years, HDMI options for FreeSync have become increasingly available, albeit they remain relatively rare. Consult your monitor’s manual to identify the port necessary for FreeSync.
